The Truth Is Out There

 The X-Files

In the basement of the J. Edgar Hoover building in Washington, DC you will find the main office of the X-Files. At least, you will in this television program. The X-Files is a division of the FBI that deals with unsolved cases. These cases typically involve paranormal or unexplained phenomena.
Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully Special Agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) began his FBI career in the violent crimes section as a top notch profiler. But his interest in things of a paranormal nature, along with his uncanny abilities and talents, helped earn him the nickname of 'Spooky' and a definite reputation in the Bureau. Eventually, he was allowed to work on the X-Files. Introduce Special Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), a fresh from the Academy medical doctor with her point of view established firmly in the realm of science. Initially assigned to debunk Mulder's theories, skeptical Scully soon finds there is more to these X-Files than mere rumors and paranoia. A unique partnership is formed, and over the course of the series, a unique friendship as well.
While the program has covered a wide variety of what has come to be know as "monster of the week" episodes, the show also has developed its own "mythology". Initially, this mythology was born from Mulder's own personal experience - that of Samantha's (his sister) abduction when they were children. It is Mulder's belief that she was abducted by aliens, and one of the main reasons for his interest in the X-Files is a hope that what he finds there will someday lead him to the truth about Samantha. Now, over the period of several seasons, the mythology has become rather complicated. While the show's mantra promises "The Truth Is Out There", it remains to be seen if Chris Carter (creator of the X-Files) will ever reveal that truth to the satisfaction of this viewer.
So why do I like the X-Files? Well, being an aficionado of science fiction in general, I enjoy the plots. I also enjoy the mythology of the show, and trying to figure out what it all means in terms of the 'bigger picture' (even if it drives me absolutely bonkers). The overall production of the series is outstanding, including aspects such as special effects, lighting, music, and all that other fancy cinematographic stuff that I don't understand but somehow recognize as looking really cool on the screen <g>. The program has earned something of a reputation for being particularly skilled in its production, and if you've ever watched even one episode, you know it has a particular "feel". Also the acting is some of the finest around, not only for the two leads but for the entire supporting cast. I am seldom, if ever, disappointed in what I see from these people on a weekly basis. And finally, even I will admit to a certain 'visual appeal' when it comes to a particular FBI agent... <grin>

Michelle's Favorite X-Files Related Spots on the Web!

There are literally hundreds of X-Files and related sites. Here are my favorites...

The X-Files Web Page - take a visit for all the official information. And it's nicely done. The overall atmosphere of the site is very much in keeping with the show's unique "feel".

X-Philes for Christ - interested in meeting up with some people of the Christian faith who not only enjoy talking about the X Files, but who also make it a point to pray for each other? Then visit this site for more information.

One of the things I enjoy about the Internet is it provides the ability for me to find and contact other people with similar interests as myself. I've met various X-Philes, and they often have some very interesting things to say about the episodes. I've become especially fond of reading reviews of one particular X-Phile, Autumn Tysko. Her reviews can found at Autumn's Reviews on The X-Files Experience page maintained by Roni.

Looking for web sites that are directed more towards David Duchovny or Gillian Anderson? I suggest these as wonderful places to start:

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to David Duchovny - yes, there really is such a group. They strive to "Defend, Enlighten, and Protect!" And they have a great web site. Find out how the Society came to be, learn all sorts of things about DD, and of course there are pictures and links to keep you going for days. Drop on by!

The Gillian Anderson Web Site (GAWS) - as it's introductory page claims, I do believe this is the largest source of Gillian Anderson paraphernalia on the Internet. And it's a very classy job too, so check it out!

The X-Files is one genre in which I haven't experienced a great desire to try out my fan fiction tendencies. However, that doesn't mean I haven't used these FBI agents in at least one little adventure outside their normal sphere of existence...

XDS: An X-Files - Due South - Star Wars Crossover

I have to admit it. This is the most monumental task I've ever taken on as a fan fiction writer. So, in that sense alone, I'm rather proud of this work. (That doesn't mean it's good, of course - you'll have to decide that for yourself.) What happens? Well, FBI Agent Fox Mulder suddenly gets interested in a seemingly insignificant case in Chicago, Illinois. Naturally, Agent Dana Scully gets pulled along with her partner's enthusiasm. Before long, Detective Ray Vecchio of the Chicago PD and Constable Benton Fraser of the RCMP are mixed in the fray. Things get even more intriguing when some folks from a galaxy far, far away come into the picture. Oh yeah, -- there's even a Wookie and a wolf popping up from time to time. Interested?
